Folks,

Just a reminder, that the October club meeting is this coming Tuesday (1st) at the usual venue @ 4pm.

Please remember to bring along any assignment photos (Windows), or any other photos you've taken or been working on recently.

Rgds,

Folks,

Sorry it's taken me so long to write up the October meeting.

We showed a very interesting and inspiring video of 40s, 50's 60's street photographer Vivian Maier, which illustrated, I think, how effective simple B&W compositions can be. Of course, the skill is to make actually quite well thought out shots 'look' simple!

We also looked at the requirement to sharpen to some extent digital images as part of normal post processing, the correlation between sharpening and noise, and the differing tools and techniques to achieve subtle results.

The October field trip is on Tuesday the 15th at Macael. Meeting at 11am, location yet to be decided. Check Richard's post in the Field Trip section.

The monthly assignment is 'Abstract' which can be interpreted any way you like, whether it is an abstract shape or a creative photographic, 'arty' effect... The world's your lobster!

Next month's club meeting will be on the 12th November at 4pm.

Rgds,
Howard Very Happy

Thanks for the summary.

I should have asked on the day, but what is the difference between unsharp mask and sharpen?

No need to respond here Howard, but perhaps you can explain it to me on the field trip.

Richard.

No problem Richard, quite 'simple' really...

The only real difference is the algorithm used within the Unsharp Mask tool. Older Sharpen tools just created sharpness by increasing contrast across the board, and was fairly crude, sharpening everything.

Unsharp Mask method looks at the whole image and masks any flat areas of even tone and colour. It then applies the contrast to the detail that is left, which 'should' be the edges. This cuts out unwanted noise, and with Radius and Amount sliders, gives a fair bit of control.

Lightroom is by far the best at doing this now, with a great Mask slider that allows you to preview live what areas are being masked for accurate sharpening.

Thanks. Why call it unsharp mask then? Surely, you are looking to sharpen something? Never mind, now I know, thanks.

It's masking the areas that aren't getting sharpened... Unsharp Mask? Rubbish name, but you get the idea. Should really be called selective sharpening!

Howard
